Choosing the Right Needle Length

It's crucial to understand that the needle length on a device does not always equate to the depth of penetration into the skin.

The ideal depth range for hair growth is generally 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm of skin penetration.

This level of penetration is found to be effective for triggering wound healing without causing unnecessary damage.

This is in contrast to damaging the hair stem cell bulge, which can cause longer healing times.

Device Recommendations

For microneedling rollers, use 0.75 mm - 1 mm needles.

For microneedling pens, use 0.5 mm - 0.8 mm needles.

It's important to target the dermis layer, which contains microvascular networks and is the area where growth factors are released. This is where microvascular ruptures occur, and a wound-healing response is induced, without hitting the stem cell bulge. Also, avoid depths that cause significant bleeding.

A study showed that better hair regrowth was seen in the 0.6mm group just above that stem cell bulge.
